Introduction
The word comes from the Latin word lignin lignum, meaning wood, so the plants that contain large amounts of lignin are referred to as woody.
Lignin is formed by the irreversible removal of water from sugars, creating aromatic compounds. Polymer lignin structures are transconectadas with a molecular weight of 10,000.
Is characterized by a complex aromatico (no carbohydrate) of which there are many structural polymers (lignin). It is convenient to use the term lignin in a collective sense to point to the lignin fraction of the fiber. After polysaccharides, lignin is the most abundant organic polymer in the plant world. Importantly, is the only non polysaccharide fiber is known.
This component of wood that are performing multiple functions essential for plant life. For example, it provides rigidity to the cell wall. Actually, lignified tissues resist the attack of microorganisms, preventing the penetration of destructive enzymes in the cell wall.
